They gave her amoxicilin and of course I'm keeping her home from school today. Dr said about 15% of negatives are false and a culture will probably come back positive. If it isn't strep it is probably a viral infection. The rapid strep test (RST) is a rapid antigen detection test. Old has been to the Dr. 3 times in the last 4ish months or so for strep-like symptoms. Rapid tests came back negative all 3 times, but she was put on antibiotics anyway each time. She did have strep! Problem is that the rapid test (apparently) only tests for the most common strain of strep. My daughter had an uncommon strain that never would have shown up as a positive with a rapid test. Is this considered a false negative? Not sure, but she did have strep all along. Glad we know now. Just to echo Ohio.the rapid strep is not as accurate.

Which is why they usually (always?) do both tests if it comes up negative (I don't think it gives a false positive though). We used to be in for strep frequently. My ped always said she had good news and bad news. At least strep can be treated and they'll typically feel better and be back in school in a day. The rapid strep test is 100% accurate for postive strep; about 95% accurate if it's negative.

Many times kids with extremely high temps and lots of upper-respiratory symptoms do not have strep, but a viral illness. As maciesmom says above, strep can be treated. Sadly, viral illnesses cannot, and the child just has to get better with TLC.
